Someone in fandom took that and decided to start using it as code for âhey if this has a warning on it, you should take it seriously.â For example, noncon in the tags meansâŚthereâs noncon!! It means, itâs not toeing the line. Itâs what the tags say it is.

While I ABSOLUTELY appreciate authors over tagging anything (and will do so myself with certain topics), if you consume as much fanfic as I do, and arenât put off by ALL less than savory content, then you kinda get desensitized to certain tags because authors tagged the fic for even MENTIONING the thing, or itâs background noise/not descriptive.
Then every now and then, you find the fic that has the tag and the author is not fucking around when they tagged it- I cannot fuss, because they did their job and tagged the thing, but a âdead dove: do not eatâ add on tells me implicitly that the author is not sugarcoating or being overly conscientious in the tagging. Tis exactly what it says on the tin, for better or worse.
