Hello from Ireland and go mo leithsceal for the slow reply!
It may have moved like your old arm, but it sure as hell
didn’t feel like it. You watched new fingers flex, glinting as they caught the
light. It moved how you told it to and yet it felt so…wrong. Your whole body
did now. You felt like you were a ghost possessing a foreign host. You had lost
a lot in that blast, but you were grateful for what you had left: your life.By some miracle (and some miracle worker) you had survived.
You were always a fighter, and through everything you kept fighting to get back
to the one you loved. And since he had pulled you from the rubble he had
refused to leave your side, needing to be dragged from the operating theatre
while Angela furiously worked to save your life. Once she had told him what
needed to be done his heart had sank. As much as he tried it was still difficult
to come to terms with his new form and the dark times were painful wound in his
mind. He wouldn’t wish that upon anyone. Or so he thought until now. As selfish
as it was, he couldn’t let you go.The days stretched into weeks and you had still not awoken
from the induced coma. And Genji was by your bedside every moment he could
spare. But the world continued to spin and threats continued to pop up. As much
as it broke his heart to leave you, his presence was needed elsewhere. However,
as soon as word reached him that you had woken up the mission became
insignificant.Admittedly it was a shock to you when you saw your new body.
Once the shock had worn off, you had to admit it was pretty cool. You had
always admired Genji’s body and now you were just like him. You didn’t see it
as a loss of your old body, but the gaining of a new one. Of course it would
take quite a bit of adaptation, but it took years to first learn how to walk
and talk and navigate your human body after all. You were fairly confident that
you’d get this down in a few weeks. You had just began testing out your new body when Genji
burst through the door. Though he had rushed to see you, not that he was finally
looking upon you he found that he was frozen in place, overcome that you were
finally awake and you were alive. Words and logic failed him and it was you who
finally broke the silence.“Look!” you said cheerfully, “I’m a cyborg too now!”
Seeing that smile on your face snapped him from his trance
and in a blink he had crossed the room and engulfed you in his arms. It felt
odd to not properly be able to feel his embrace. And you had to admit that you
would miss that. You were pulled from your thoughts by a sharp whirring coming
from your new body. Genji instantly pulled away, frantically looking for the
issue. Both of you were put at ease when Angela came over with a small smile
playing on her lips.“Careful with the excitement, Genji,” she told him, “I still
need to adjust the cooling system to their specifications.”“So does this thing come with an instruction manual?” you joked
as Angela tinkered with the issue.“Your model does. Its title is Genji and I’m sure he’ll be
of some help.”There was a gentle hiss as Genji removed his faceplate to
press a kiss to where the cool metal met your skin at your jaw.“I will be with you every mechanical step of the way,” he
vowed.

Could you please write that Genji is dying in reader’s arms? They sadly confess their feelings to him and tell him he’s not dying alone. That he goes loved and admired.
Genji’s lights began to splutter, that familiar an reassuring green flickering in and out. Your chest tightened and you move your fumbling fingers across his weaker ones to take off his mask.
“It’s alright,” he said with a smile on his face, “Death comes to us all eventually.”
You gave a choked sob at that, wishing you were the one dying in his stead. You saw a flash of confusion cross his face and you just pressed your lips against his bloodied ones.
“I love you,” you said, “I regret not saying it sooner but I have for a while.”
His thumb gently brushed your cheek, his dark eyes peering into yours, “I care for you as well.”
You rested your forehead against his, feeling his chest heave with the strain of breathing. He pressed his forehead into yours as well, the two of you closed your eyes.
“You won’t be alone,” you said, your chest aching with unsaid words, “You’re loved and admired by everyone.”
“Thank you,” he said, his grip weakening on your arm as he died.
god DAMN that reader cheating w/the Shimadas scenario broke my heart 💔 but i have a follow up: reader #2 witnessed everything behind the scope of Ana’s sniper while training late at night together. Ana calls the training off, and r#2 quickly comes in to do whatever they can to help Genji get space/comfort to cope (they’re friends). When things settle over, r#2 waits for a better time before asking Genji on a date. How does that go, and where does it lead?
You were having a good time scoping the premises through the sniper’s lens. You felt so naughty peering in on some of the other operatives, but it was late enough that most everyone was asleep so you weren’t being too invasive.
Then, you spot Genji’s S/O creeping around. That was bizarre. The creeping, yes, but you hardly see them alone and without Genji around. Be it your insatiable curiosity or a need to size up the “competition” you decide to keep watching. You notice them confront Hanzo and— oh lord, are they making out? Holy shit. No way. Oh god. Do you tell Genji? OH SHIT THERE’S GENJI.
You watch helplessly as your dear friend runs off, likely very heartbroken considering what he just witnessed. Wow… what a heartless— you’d be sure to give Genji’s new EX a piece of your mind, but first you needed to comfort your friend. You explain the situation to Ana and she lets you go without question.
You rush to Genji’s room, where you assumed he ran to. This was the direction eh ran towards, so it was a safe bet. You raise your hand to knock on the door and hear a pitiful sniffle behind the door. Yep… he’s in there alright. You knock. There is silence. You hear Genji step up to the door and it is silent again. He was likely looking through the peephole to be safe. When he saw it was you, he opened the door, haphazardly putting his visor back on so you couldn’t see his face.
You gently explained how you saw everything that just occurred and Genji lets another whimper slip out.
“I don’t understand,” he mutters. “Why?”
You simply shake your head, completely flabbergasted by what has happened.
“They didn’t know what they had, Genji. They’re really missing out making a stupid choice like that. Anyone would be lucky to have a guy like you,” is all you say.
Genji silently invites you inside and you spend the rest of the evening consoling the ailing ninja. You were his shoulder to cry on and he made sure to thank you every time he could between sobs.
Several weeks have passed since then and Genji appears to be doing much better. He doesn’t so much as look in the same direction as his ex, but he seems very chipper and refuses to let them bring him down any more. It makes you sick to see them hugging Hanzo’s arm and showering him with adoration out in the open like that, though… As if Hanzo hadn’t done enough to his brother already. Still, you didn’t want to involve yourself in that. You were more interested in Genji.
The last thing you wanted was to catch him on the rebound, but you have wanted Genji for ages. You didn’t want to pass this opportunity up. You would be subtle about it, asking him out for casual outings and taking the time to get to know each other even better— if that was even possible. You two were close enough as it is.
After a few of these dates, you work up the courage to ask Genji if he’d like to get more serious. He… takes a few moments to think it over, but he eventually agrees. It’s more or less a testing the waters kind of agreement, though and he asks that you understand if he wants to back out later.
He never did. He’s been far more happy with you as his s/o, and he feels he can trust you to stay loyal waaay more than his ex. He does get a little clingy but you completely understand, given what has happened. Besides, you kind of like the attention. ❤
Reader dating Genji but falls in love with Hanzo.
You and Genji had been dating for awhile. You were his everything, the light of his life, and he made sure to let you know that every single day. It was sweet and all, but you feared he was getting to be a little… clingy. You understood he suffered a tragic past and finding someone to love must have meant a lot to him, but his obsession was only serving to drive you away. It’s like you couldn’t walk 5 feet away from him without him asking where you were going, or panicking about you leaving, or insisting he come with you. You needed your space!!!
But then… well after the Overwatch recall, a new man came to join the fight. A handsome man, a man wit a strong look in his eyes, a man that screamed of bad boy. You find out is name is Hanzo and just the sight of him gives you feelings you never had around Genji. You found yourself staring every time Hanzo passed you by. With each passing moment, you grew more and more attracted to him.
You just had to get closer to Hanzo.
You decide to sneak out of your room some time after curfew. It was the only time you had away from Genji. Now you just hoped Hanzo was still awake. You creep through the halls of Watchpoint: Gibraltar until you see Hanzo’s nameplate on a door.
With hesitation, you knock and you are surprised with how quickly Hanzo answers. Gosh, he’s even dreamier up close… Hanzo asks why you are here, and without much thought, you jump forward and press your lips to his. You run your hands through his soft, dark hair and let out a soft moan as the kiss feels even better than you imagined.
Hanzo stiffens at first and places his hands on your shoulders as if he was getting ready to push you away. But, he quickly melts and ends up returning the kiss with fervor. The two of you held each other close, melting in each other’s affection until you heard a gasp behind you.
You swiftly turn your head and see Genji standing behind you. He had a hand over his mask, as if he was trying to cover his mouth. Even through his visor, you could see the utter heartbreak in his eyes and before you could explain yourself, Genji sprinted away as he tried holding back tears.
Hanzo was quick to follow suit, hoping to comfort Genji and explain himself. Only now have you noticed the entirety of Hanzo’s name plate. Hanzo Shimada. He was… Genji’s brother.
Fuck.
Dragon’s Nest Ch 2
“Hanzo, wait,” Genji said, putting a hand out towards him, “We did not call you here to make this awkward for you.”
You deflated in relief, and you put your hand to your chest. “Oh, thank god.”
Then you got nervous for a different reason. With both your favourite men here, there was a greater chance of embarrassing yourself.
“Why am I here?”
“No one’s making you stay-” Hanzo started to grumble.
“Hanzo!”
Genji’s small shout and your glare shut him up.
“Perhaps you would feel better if you were in charge of telling her…?” Genji asked him.
Hanzo glanced at his brother and bit back a remark about Genji taking too long to spit out the words, anyway. Then his eyes shifted to you.
“Genji and I discussed us…sharing you,” he said.
“You would…you would be willing to do that?” you asked.
“I am not entirely convinced,” Hanzo stated.
“Why?” you asked.
“I am not worthy,” he said, crossing his arms and looking elsewhere. He spoke as if it was an established fact that everyone knew, but you nearly went cross-eyed with confused frustration.
You sighed at Hanzo. “Can you believe this nonsense?” you asked Genji.
He put a hand to his hip and the other in front of his ‘face’. “I can, actually.”
You mirrored Hanzo’s body language.
“Hanzo? We’re always together,” you said. “Remember all the times you encouraged me?”
You planted your feet in the proper stance for using firearms. Held the gun using both arms for knockback. Then fired the handgun at the paper target across the room.
You missed the target, again, a hole in the far side of the white paper. Not even within the humanoid shape printed in black. You were the only one at the practice range right now, so you removed your ear protection and growled.
“I could do better, and I use a bow.”
“Excuse you, Hanzo Shimada,” you said, whipping around to glare at him. He was smirking at you. You spied the twinkle in his brown eyes. He was taunting you on purpose.
You’ll show that asshole, you thought, putting the noise-muffling earmuffs back on.
You landed the next three shots near the heart of the target, and the rest were good enough for your current skill level.
You grinned wide, proud of yourself. You almost jumped in place for joy, until one of the earmuffs lifted from your ear.
“I told you so,” Hanzo whispered in your ear before letting the earmuff fall back to the side of your head. You blushed at his close proximity, before getting annoyed and whipping around again to swing a fist at him. He hopped back and chuckled at you.
“Remember? I did so much better after I realized I could.”
Hanzo looked more thoughtful than pouty, and you seized the opportunity to keep going.
“And remember when I was having a particularly bad period that one month? You didn’t know what to do, so you brought me a whole chocolate cake. Because you heard women love chocolate.”
“A whole cake, Hanzo?” laughed Genji.
Hanzo wrinkled his nose at his brother.
“Hey, it was good,” you said, smiling gently at the good memory.
“Anyway, it is not a bad idea. Think about it. Hanzo and I are gone so often, that the two of us combined should be enough attention for one person,” Genji said, taking your hand and holding it by the fingers. His thumb rubbed your knuckles. Despite his covered face, the way he looked at you communicated that he wanted to do more than just hold your hand.
“Do you mind?”
Hanzo broke the intensity again.
“No!” you answered.
You strode over to him, and his eyebrows came together in confusion. Before Hanzo could ask what you were doing, you grabbed his face, forcefully applied your lips to his, and closed your eyes. He stared at you in shock for a second before his expression relaxed. You took the opportunity to rub your thumbs along the beard on his jaw. The hair was as soft as the hair on your own head.
You made a mental note to tease him about it later.
You both pulled away naturally at the same time. You got lost in each others’ eyes for a few sweet seconds before Hanzo looked to Genji and glared.
“I can feel your shit-eating grin from here!”
Genji giggled. You dropped your hands from Hanzo’s face. He looked at you again but without the glare.
“This is going to take some getting used to,” he said.
“I have seen stranger things in my travels,” Genji said.
“I have not,” Hanzo countered, glancing in his direction.
Genji shrugged.
“I,” you said, not completely confident in putting your feelings into words, “think I like this. No one gets hurt…assuming you two can behave.”
“It might take some time,” said Hanzo, quietly. His eyes wandered your face and then downward.
“Eyes up here, Hanzo,” you told him, patting the underside of his chin. He blinked.
Genji walked past you both, his ribbon trailing behind him.
“I have other things to do while you both get used to this arrangement…”
Imagine Genji’s child being afraid of him but being fine with Hanzo and even calling him “Papa” instead of Genji
Just a little thing written after @imagine-this-overwatch ’s idea of Genji having a child that’s afraid of him, and my addition of the child being fine with Hanzo. Check them, they’re awesome!
I apologise if there are some major typos but Word on my tablet is kinda… Stupid. A reader-insert, as always. I kept it all as gender neutral as possible.
I did my best 🙂

To see Genji excited about something was always the cutest thing and, unfortunately, since the baby was born and you found how afraid they were off him, the rarest.
So when Genji came back home from a mission, just bursting through the door and jumping around in happiness, you were surprised. However, when he told you the reason, you joined him on his excitement.
Having Hanzo come over for a dinner was a big thing for you. You had never gotten a chance to meet your brother-in-law since he insisted to remain away from Genji’s life because he still deemed himself unworthy of his forgiveness, so accepting a dinner invitation meant progress.
You were a mess that day, running around the house trying to make everything perfect and stressing over nothing. After all, you also wanted Hanzo to accept you as family and you wanted to make a good first impression. Genji was very chill about it but made sure to help you at everything.
Finally the time came. The doorbell made your heart hammer rapidly with nerves. This was it, you were meeting your brother-in-law.
Genji was the one who invited him in. You showed up in the living room with the baby in your arms and Genji made the introductions. You could see that Hanzo was just as nervous as you, which relaxed you. You welcomed him, trying to relax him as well and just be nice.
Dinner went nicely, the three of you held some light conversation and afterwards settled in the living room. The conversation eventually went to the baby and their fear of Genji, while they paid in the corner of the room.
“I always thought they would grow out of it, but it’s been a year and half and I still can’t hold them without scaring them…” Genji mentioned with a sad voice as you held his hand reassuringly. You could also see Hanzo shrink in his spot, probably thinking it to be his fault… And in a way, it was.
“It’s okay, Genji, it will go away. At least now they don’t cry if you’re in the same room, so that’s progress!” You noted “ And they really love that plush dragon you got them for Christmas!”
As if taking a cue, the baby came running with wobbly, recently learned steps and said toy in hand, a tailor made plush version of Genji’s dragon, and approached Hanzo, raising said toy to him with a questioning coo.
“They’re asking you to play.” Genji explained after chuckling at his brother’s confused face. However, you sensed something hidden underneath his words.
Hanzo looked at the two of you with reluctance.
“May I hold them?” Genji remained silent, but you have him your approval. You felt Genji hold his breath.
Carefully, Hanzo grabbed the child and lifted then into his lap, without a problem. The child giggled and offered him the toy to play, while Hanzo awkwardly spoke to them. The sight was honestly endearing, but…
Besides you, Genji had deflated and was almost shaking. The worst was that you couldn’t tell if the shaking was from crying or anger, envy. Either way, seeing the baby accept Hanzo’s presence and be afraid of his own was hurting him inside.
In an effort to drift his thoughts away, you changed the subject and kept the conversation going. It worked to some extend, but Hanzo kept playing with the baby as he spoke and you could tell Genji was really hurt that Hanzo had been nominated New Playmate.
Eventually, the night came to an end and Hanzo had to leave. The baby wasn’t happy to see their playtime cut short and constantly tried to reach out to Hanzo while you held them. And when the three of you said your final goodbyes, the unexpected happened.
“Papa!” The child screamed, reaching out to Hanzo when they saw him turn towards the door, in a last effort to make they new playmate stay a little longer.
If Widowmaker shot you, it would have hurt less than the look on Genji’s face at the moment.
The baby’s first word, and it immediately seemed to disregard his own role in their life. Maybe because they didn’t call him “Papa”.
You excused yourself upstairs to put the baby to sleep and blink away the tears while Hanzo finally left. The baby didn’t just murder Genji’s hope at that moment, it hurt you too. For once, you feared your child would never love him. You had been trying to teach them to talk for a while, and you had tried to teach them that word in an effort to give Genji some hope for the future.
The way things can backfire…
Calming the baby took a while but you eventually did it and put them in the crib. But before you could sing them to sleep, a crash was heard from downstairs.
“Genji?!” you called out, but not only did you not get a response, but the ruckus didn’t stop, so you ran downstairs.
You found your living room half destroyed. The decorative wall mirror was on the opposite corner of the room, shattered, clearly thrown there. The coffee table had been flipped into the cupboard, breaking it and it’s contents, and you found Genji in the middle of it all, finishing his rampage by throwing his mask at your feet before releasing a scream akin to a wounded animal which ripped through the air and your insides, and finally falling to his knees, sobbing.
You didn’t know what to do. The Genji you knew was always calm. Yes, he had some breakdowns, but this… Seeing him crying, vulnerable like that… Your chest hurt.
“Baby…?” You tried to keep your voice calm, but it cracked.
“Leave me alone… please…” Genji turned his back to you. “Just… go to sleep”
You shook your head and stepped forward. You knelt behind him and hug his waist. He flinched, and you just held him harder.
“Please, don’t cry.” You begged, setting your head on his shoulder. “Everything will be fine…Just give it time…”
You kept trying to comfort him with promises and reassurances alternated with kisses all over any part of him you could reach, but you knew it wasn’t working, Genji didn’t believe you this time.
How could he when you didn’t believe it yourself?
How could you hurt me like this
You’re a monster
Have to add to this:
Hanzo calls you he next day and asks hesitantly, “What happened afterward?”
You sigh and explain in a hushed tone, before swallowing back a sob, “I’ve never seen him like that.”
Hanzo is silent for a long time, before he grunts, “I have an idea. Would Genji allow me to return?”
You glance over at the couch, the only survivor of last nights rampage. Genji lay fast asleep, folded into the fetal position with his front facing the couch. You think for a moment, before saying,
“What’s your idea? I’ll try to talk to him in the mean time.”
*******
“I don’t think this will work.” Genji says sullenly.
You’re not exactly optimistic yourself, but if there’s a chance…
“Let’s give it a try.” you say.
He nods, and remains in the hallway as you fetch your crying son. Instead of trying to hush him, you face him towards his darkened room, and step out into the darkened hallway. Genji gently rubs the boys back, while softly singing a Japanese lullaby. After a few moments, the boy calms down and falls back asleep.
You take him back into the room, and lay him down in his bed, before joining Genji in the hall,
“He’ll still be petrified of me when he wakes up…” Genji says.
“It’ll take time,” you say, “all things worth waiting for do.”
Genji nods, “I don’t blame my brother for what happened. If i could choose a father who looks human and one who looks like…” he gestures to his face, “… i’d choose him too.”
As you reach for him, Genji turns and vanishes into the darkness. He needs his space, and after last night, he’s probably gone off somewhere to destroy something you don’t value.
“Oh Genji…” you whisper.

How could he when you didn’t believe it yourself?
Imagine you have a child with Genji.
But the child is afraid of Genji and his cyborg body. 👀
Genji tries interacting with the child with his mask off, he speaks gently and tries to shower the child in hugs and kisses. But the child just flinches, tries to pull away, and cries for you to come save them.
Imagine Genji feeling so heartbroken. To be denied the love of his child because of his mutilated body… Genji begins to hate his body again. He retreats into himself and doesn’t even let you touch him like you used to.
Whenever he hears the child crying, begging for attention, Genji wants so badly to rush in and hold his precious child but knowing they’d just recoil in fear…. he’d start to cry as well.
I WILL MAKE YOU SORRY
I can just imagine Blackwatch!Genji and lilSister! Reader be so caught up that she ends up being a strong fighter for the organization. So Genji voices his concern by being a dick to her and rude. They still do love eachother but they both are bitter by how they are treating eachother (mostly reader being angry at Genji’s short outburst) maybe when Genjis reached that part in his life with Zenyatta, that he’s comfortable with his body, he just surprises sister with kisses she’s never
Experienced in a very long time, so it just ends up with her in tears. She’s felt alone for a very long time, not being comfortable enough to talk to Genji knowing how he is, and that it’s not easy talking to him like she used to anymore. So she cries and cries because she’s dealing with her own shit, so the need to be there as emotional support for the both of them leads her to be exhausted almost everyday. Because she’s never stopped loving him, or Hanzo despite everything that’s happened. Pt2
She just wants her father back with her and her life to be back to normal. But she won’t ever have that again. She just hopes that Genji will continue to love her again like he used to, and hopes that wherever Hanzo is, that he’s okay. That her father is at peace, even though she’ll never experience an intimacy and love that she’s had with Sojiro pt 3
Reyes has to mediate their little “fights.” He’s so exasperated with the both of them. Like he gets it, they’re siblings, but really? Can they be professional for once, without him having to demand it? She’s apart of the Blackwatch trio along with Jesse and anytime anything goes even remotely wrong on mission Genji is all over his sister about it. It is cause he cares, he’s just lost his ability to express concern in a way that doesn’t make him an asshole.
Sister!Reader starts biting back, it’s not often, but there’s only so much attitude she can take. She didn’t do this to him. But she’s still there for him, and Genji’s conflicted, about many things, but this in particular cause he knows he’s being a terrible brother to her, but he can’t seem to stop himself, no matter how self-aware he is. Forget being intimate together, it’s just not happening.
Thinking about Hanzo keeps her up at night. She’s not even sure if he’s alive, let alone where he is, or what’s he’s doing. Hanzo is so allusive that not even Blackwatch could find him. In truth even for all of her bitter feelings, just how angry and hurt she was, she’s glad they didn’t. She’s not sure it would have ended well for him. If they would have offered him a plea deal. Or if Hanzo would have been cool-headed enough to even accept it. Reyes never explicitly said it, but she had some intuition that told her he would have thrown Hanzo in a jail he never would have gotten out of.
I’d imagine, after the explosion, Zenyatta takes them both under his wing. Sisters stays at the omnic monastery while Zenyatta and Genji travel and he helps him heal. I can see her finding her own omnic healer, one who stays with her, listens to her rant, gives her guidance. And by the time Genji comes back home (I see them being gone for like 6 months) Genji’s a different person.
(I kind of feel bad for her cause she’s gotten 3 different Genji’s in her lifetime. The one she grew up with, the one in Blackwatch, and the one who comes back enlightened by Zen. Yes he’s the same person at his core but phew.)
Genji showers her with love, asks her if she can forgive him. She already had. She’s so overwhelmed that she just breaks down crying and Genji takes the time to be there for her like she was there for him. This is nothing compared to what she had to put up with, but he’ll make it up to her.
Dragon’s Nest
You sat in the cafeteria, nursing your food. A table over, that large man you knew as Reinhardt slapped the cowboy, McCree, on the back. He hit the man harder than he intended, because McCree slapped face-first into his food. Reinhardt gasped in horror, and then the cowboy lifted his food-dripping face to glare at the large man. Genji sat on the other side of McCree, shoulders shaking with poorly-contained laughter.
You watched them with longing, wishing you were laughing with them. Specifically, sitting next to Genji. Maybe leaning against him, holding his hand under the table, exploring the cybernetic parts of his hand with your fingers.
“I am no stranger to pining looks at my brother.”
You ducked your head at that. Hanzo sat down the table from you, judging you with a flat expression. How he got there without you noticing, you didn’t know. He just sort of appeared there with his neat-looking sandwich with all the dressings and the wheat bread, putting your heated leftovers to shame. You wanted to flatten yourself against the table. Then roll into a ball. Then roll on out of the room. Disappear. You had been caught pining like a teenager. You knew it, he knew it.
“Can we please change the subject?”
You pleaded with your eyes. He nodded. You straightened your posture and faced him with your whole body, taking it upon yourself to choose the next talking point.
“What made you decide to cut your hair like that? I heard you had beautiful hair,” Hanzo narrowed his eyes just enough that you detected it, “I mean, not that your hair isn’t nice now. I like it!”
You hopefully backpedaled enough for him to realize you meant no offense. And it was true, you did like his haircut. You wondered if the buzzcut part of it was soft to the touch. There was no way a man like him would let you reach out and feel.
“I just liked it.”
Oh, thank goodness. He wasn’t mad.
“Fair enough,” you said. “Same with the piercings?”
Hanzo nodded again.
The conversation almost died right there and with it a good first impression. You were horrified inside, blaming yourself. Hanzo looked away, brushing lint off his light grey, long-sleeve shirt.
“Genji said I should get to know everyone,” he admitted. He didn’t sound convinced, and his eyelids dipped in a way that gave him an unimpressed expression.
“Probably wise,” you said.
Hanzo looked you in the eye again. His stare was more intense than most. His beauty made up for any discomfort at being regarded so intensely. You would have forgotten about his brother had Hanzo not mentioned him just now.
“I thought we were changing the subject,” you pointed out.
Hanzo looked away again, giving your gaze the opportunity to break from his and slide down the curve of his cheekbones and settle in his lips.
“I know that everyone wants to know what happened between us, my brother and I.”
It was no secret that a lot of agents have been gossiping about what happened between these two. But that doesn’t mean you were tactless enough to ask one of them to their face.
“Yes,” you said, leaning forward, “but we don’t have to talk about it.” Your hand cut through the air to underscore what you said.
Hanzo eyed you for a few seconds, deciding whether or not you were sincere. You were, so you just stared back. He sighed to himself and looked down.
“I had liked the idea of getting piercings since I was a child,” he said. You smiled, happy that he was being honest. You felt like you were getting somewhere with this man. You rested your cheek in your hand and your elbow on the table, watching him speak. “I had wanted to do this for so long that getting them did not feel like rebellion. It felt like relief.”
Your eyebrows flew up. “Wow.” You had never heard anyone describe piercing their flesh as relief.
“Yes,” he said softly.
You regarded him for a moment.
“You know…we can’t really have a proper conversation with you sitting all the way over there.”
Hanzo got up and moved his tray next to yours, but not before giving you a look that said he would blame you if this ended in disaster.
That encouraged you to be friendlier out of spite.
The two of you ate in silence for the next few minutes. Hanzo was close enough that you heard the crunch of the lettuce when he bit into his sandwich.
“What else do you do for…‘relief’?” you asked, restarting the conversation.
Hanzo eyed you again, and you realized how suggestive that sounded.
“I just, I-I meant that-”
“I know what you meant,” Hanzo cut in dismissively. “You are interested in my brother, therefore you wouldn’t flirt with me.”
You couldn’t look at him the handsome man and say that wasn’t true.
But the moment passed, because Hanzo went on to answer your question.
Turns out the two of you fit together well as friends. You encountered him naturally because of your jobs as agents, and he gravitated to your side more and more to make a comment or two, sparking a conversation.
You both had a love of being alone on your off time, but when you were together, you were so comfortable that it was like you were alone. Hanzo didn’t require you to talk to him or keep him entertained. When you did talk, the conversation flowed easily. While he was blunt, and sometimes that hurt, he didn’t seek to hurt you. It didn’t take long for you to learn that, and to start correcting him when he went too far.
You listened to Hanzo speak about any topic with genuine interest, but when he spoke of Genji, you mentally tucked away anything you learned. Hanzo noticed your interest. You tried to hide it by pressing your lips together, but the corners of your mouth twitched upwards. You looked elsewhere, but your eyes crinkled with joy.
“What do you see in him, anyway?” he asked one day.
“He’s so chill. But every once in a while, he’ll throw out a comment that makes you wanna punch him. Or kiss him. Not sure which.”
Hanzo sighed.
“I could never understand why some people would want to listen to him.”
“You do the same thing,” you shot back. Hanzo sniffed. “Also, the vibration in his voice; it’s cute.”
His face screwed up into a mix of confusion and disgust at the reference to his brother’s cyborg body.
“You like what he has become?”
“I do. He’s still a man,” you said. “Well, that nice ass doesn’t hurt.”
“I see,” Hanzo answered with that deep voice of his.
You thought the conversation died right there. You settled back into your knitting. The scarf you were making for Lena’s birthday was getting tighter the more rows you added. You sighed at the length of wool in your lap, but continued. Lena wouldn’t mind; she would appreciate the thought either way.
“You should tell him.”
“No,” you always replied, refusing to hear different.
And Hanzo always looked at you like you were being a fool. And maybe you were, but that was your decision as an adult.
Hanzo continued to stare at you. But this time he didn’t wear the contempt you thought was rude and wanted to slap off his gorgeous face (one of these days, the look of shock will be worth it). Hanzo looked through you, weariness in his expression. Then he blinked and lifted his chin, gazing at you again.
“If you won’t, I will.”
Hanzo put his bow aside on your bed and got up to leave.
“No, Hanzo, please,” you begged, getting up as well to jog towards him, but the door was already shut behind him.
Hanzo brushed your words aside. He was tired of your foolishness. It gave him room to hope and believe you would fall for him instead, and forget his brother. It was time to put that hope to rest. He didn’t know what Genji would say, but Hanzo had put the truth out there. And nudge Genji in your direction.
Hanzo stood silently behind Genji, who sat perfectly still and cross-legged on one of the higher roofs of the watchpoint. His ribbon floating on the wind was the only thing about him that stirred.
“Hanzo?” Genji said simply, sensing Hanzo behind him.
“I came to talk.”
“Have a seat,” Genji said, twisting in his seat to hold out a hand in the space next to him.
“Unlike someone like you, I do not think I could sit on the hard floor for very long.”
“If you are attempting to say that now that I am a cyborg, I am a ‘hard ass’….”
Genji pulled a small, purple pillow from beneath his seat and held it in the air for Hanzo to see.
Hanzo huffed.
Genji slipped the pillow back underneath him. “Just sit, Hanzo.”
You fussed for the two hours that Hanzo left you hanging. You spammed him with messages. He usually checked the messages and got back to you in his own time. Right now he wasn’t even checking his messages.
“Come to my room,” was the message he finally sent after what felt like forever. The irritating man always phrased requests like orders.
You’re going to go to his room, all right. You’re going to give him a piece of your mind and then leave. But when you stormed into Hanzo’s room, he wasn’t alone. Genji was standing next to him.
You couldn’t look Genji in the visor. You were kind of shrunken in on yourself, hunched, and feeling that need to disappear again.
“You are sure about this?” Genji said in Japanese to Hanzo. “She won’t even look at me.”
“Do not be rude,” spat Hanzo. “Speak English.”
“You are right,” Genji said, switching back to English. He turned to you. “I apologize.”
“It’s fine,” you said quickly.
Genji took your hand and lifted it to waist-level.
“Look at me,” he implored.
You did, and he curled his fingers around your hand in a proper handhold.
“That’s better, isn’t it?”
You imagined that he was smiling at you behind his mask as he said that. You were gazing at him, and your heart was soaring. Flying off into the clouds, taking your brain function with it.
Hanzo grunted in annoyance at your moony state. It snapped you out of it, and you glared at him. Him, standing there with judgment in his eyes and his crossed arms.
“Excuse me, Mister Miserable? Don’t you try to bring me down and make me miserable like you.”
“That is not fair,” Genji said. “He is only this grumpy, because you didn’t notice his feelings for you.”
Your brain function halted again, and your jaw dropped. Then you recovered and yelled, “What?!”
You let go of Genji’s hand and turned to give Hanzo your full attention, demanding and waving your hands, “Why didn’t you tell me? You have been giving me so much shit ever since I met you. We’re not on a playground where pulling a girl’s hair is an appropriate way to signal you like someone!”
Hanzo arched a brow at you in confusion. You forgot he told you that he and Genji grew up with private tutors and probably never set foot on a school playground. Still, you had a point.
“I think I can answer this one, as well,” Genji said, amused with an undertone of wicked intent.
“No,” Hanzo said, glancing at his brother, “I will do it.”
“I’m waiting,” you said, hands on hips.
With the same weariness you saw earlier, Hanzo uncrossed his arms in preparation to tell you the truth.
“I sat near you in the cafeteria all those months ago, because I was drawn to you. And then,” he paused, and a blush spread across his cheeks, to his horror, “And then you tolerated my presence so well after that. You find me rough around the edges, and maybe I am. But you never left. Once I realized you were not going to leave, I…may…have…fallen in love with you.”
He finished with dark, rosy cheeks, but with a stubborn stare. Refusing to let his embarrassment overwhelm his ability to look you in the eye.
“I feel so comfortable around you!” Hanzo blurted, then more quietly, “But you have feelings for Genji.”
Your face softened, because you felt bad. Here were two great guys, and you somehow ended up in a love triangle with them. This was going to end badly.
